MONTREAL'S COMMUNITY
GARDENING PROGRAM
MONTREAL'S COMMUNITY GARDENING PROGRAM: A MODEL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN A MUNICIPALITY AND ITS CITIZENS
Responding to its citizen's requests, the city of Montreal
created 76 community gardens with 6,400 allotments since 1975. These serve some
10,000 people a year, which makes the program one of the most significant in
North America. After 29 years of concerted effort on the part of both gardeners
and the city administration, the program is now well-established,
publicly-accessible, and increasingly ecologically-oriented.
(Since the merge in 2002, the number of gardens within Montreal is now 97
community gardens and 8195 allotments.)
