Our first meeting of the 2002/2003 was a great success with Prof. Jodoin from the University of Ottawa presenting some research on Cold Spray Technology.  From left to right D. Seo, D. Emadi, K. Sadayappan (chair), J. Thomson, H. Saari, B. Jodoin (speaker), S. Xu, and D. Dudzinski.

The talk on "Aircraft Spins and Scary Stuff from Crash Investigations" was very captivating. Here, from left to right, is H. Saari (ASM-VC), K. Sadayappan (ASM-Chair), S. Horning (CASI), Don Langdon (speaker and tourguide), J. Bird (CASI).
Great job organizing the tour and talk CASI -- thanks.

Another investigation involves a local anphibious vehicle which sunk on June 23, 2002 and ended in tragedy.

A joint tour/meeting with CASI prooved very thorough.   The tour of the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) was put on by the speaker, Don Langdon.
Here is part of an investigation into the Swiss Air Accident. The wiring is believed to have caused a fire which brought down an aircraft.   The wiring is shown here as the TSB tries to determine which wire started the fire.

Dr. Holt (FASM) recieved his Life membership award in ASM.   Here he is presented with a pin, by the president, to commemorate the event.

For our final meeting of 2002, the President of ASM International came and visited.  His talk was very interesting and the audience was captivated.
Here he is with the excutive of the Ottawa Valley Chapter.  From left to right: S. Kuyucak, D. Muzyka (president of ASM), K. Sadayappan (chapter chair, front), S. Saari, M. Roth, D. Seo, J. Thomson, D. Dudzinski.  Missing were: R. Miller, S. Xu and D. Emadi.

At the first meeting of 2003, René Provencher gave a very thorough and interesting talk on Armor and Armor Vehicles.  This was a joint meeting between ASM and SAE with a great turnout of 45 people.

During the coffee and dessert, everyone present  benefited from a special talk on the relationship of speed and fatalities by Al Gullon.

From left to right: A. Gullon (coffee-time speaker), H. Saari (vice-chair, ASM Ottawa), R. Provencher (speaker and chair, SAE Ottawa).

For the 2003 Ottawa Valley ASM Student Poster Night $600 in prizes were up for grabs!  Over 10 students participated, including 1 high school student, 4 univeristy level student's, and 5 graduate level student's participated.   The night came to a close after an excellent presentation from M. Anal who attended the ASM Materials Camp in 2002.

Congratulations to our winners.  From left to right, K. Sadayappan (Ottawa Valley Chapter Chair), R. Kearsey (graduate level winner), J. Tsang (grand-prize winner), M. Anal (high school level winnner), K. Shea (university level winner), and R. Miller (Ottawa Valley Education Chair).

In March, Dr. Karatzas gave a talk on BioSteel, and from the questions afterwards, the talk was well recieved.

In the April meeting, some awards were handed out to our long standing members.  Unfortunately many of them were unable to attend.  Prof. Moyra McDill was able to recieve her 25 year pin from the Ottawa Valley Chapter Chair, Kumar Sadayappan.

David Lockwood gave a very enlightening talk for our last meeting in Ottawa before the summer break on the Light Emission in Silicon Nanostructures.   From left to right, J. Lo, K. Sadayappan, and D. Lockwood.

Our last meeting of the 2002/2003 season was a joint meeting with ASM-Montreal.  A tour of Hydro Quebec's IREQ facility was also scheduled.

One of our sustaining members graciously provided an 8 seater van for the trip to Varenne (just past Montreal) and 2 drivers!  Thanks VERY much.  Here we see one of the drivers, J. Thomson while the other one, S. Kuyucak, took a break.

The van was spacious and took 7 passengers.  For the tour we were required to wear hardhats.  Because the campus was so large, we had to drive between buildings.

From left to right, K. Sadayappan (Ottawa Chapter Chair), M. Trudeau (speaker), M. Brouchu (Montreal Chapter Chair)

M. Trudeau gave a very interesting talk on Nano Technology as Applied to the Electrical Field in Hydro Quebec's theatre.

After the tour, a delicious dinner was provided in the cafeteria of Hydro Quebec.  The food was tasty and plentiful!

This is the english speaking group arriving at the first building.

Our tour guide, Jean-Pierre, was a student working on his Ph. D. with IREQ.

Here our Jean-Pierre (white hard hat) explains IREQ's policy on photography.
