Guidelines for
The Ottawa Valley Chapter of
ASM International

Student Poster Night

  1. Competition open to three levels of students (college, university-undergraduate and university-graduate).
  2. $400 in prizes available to be won.  One winner from each level will receive $100 award and one-year membership to ASM.  In addition, a $200 grand prize will be awarded to the best poster overall.
  3. Poster’s subject must cover the understanding or application of metals or engineered materials and their research, design, reliable manufacture, use, or economic and social benefits.
  4. An explanatory paragraph must be visible of no more than 500 words in a 12-point font.
  5. Posters must fit within 0.8 x 1.2 metre (32"’ x 48") space.
  6. Attendees will be able to wander amongst posters and discuss topics with students.
  7. Posters must be the original design and creation of the entrants themselves.
  8. Students can work together or in teams with a clear leader specified.
  9. Judging will be done by the ASM Ottawa Valley Chapter executive and a representative from Atomic Energy of Canada.
  10. The following evaluation will be used:
  1. Appropriateness of information presented.
  2. Clarity of the material presented and demonstration of importance, obvious conclusions, and ability to stand alone, even without the explanatory paragraph.
  3. Overall impact of the display for eye-catching appeal and visual attractiveness; for its ability to draw in the viewer to investigate the individual.
  4. Creativity used in presenting topic
  5. Innovation and originality of work presented.
