Computer errors plague Statistics Canada; incorrect data published
According to media reports, Statistics Canada issued erroneous Gross domestic Procuct numbers for several provinces.
The incorrect data was published by StatsCan on their website on 11 May 2011. Several economists contacted StatsCan and challenged the data. StatsCan rechecked their computers and agreed that the data was wrong. The original 11 May 2011 website posting was quietly corrected.
An access to information request revealed that StatsCan decided to quietly change the original data posting, rather than issue a new, corrected posting, because all this was happening at the time of the 2011 Census. One internal StatsCan document stated: "While this would more clearly flag the availability of the new results to all users, due to the sensitivity of the issue and the proximity to the Census, it was not recommended at this time,"
