AMS opposes key recommendation of Coroner's Report!
Since its inception, SONAG has identified alcohol as one of the root causes of town-gown tensions, and has demanded that Queen's University Senate take back the administration of non-academic discipline which it had delegated to the students (unlike any other university in Canada)
The recent Coroner's Report into the accidental deaths of two Queen's students substantially agreed with our position. The coroner recommends that Queen's remove from the AMS, non-academic discipline regarding alcohol and safety issues.
So we are astounded, disappointed and disheartened that the Alma Mater Society has gone on record as opposing that recommendation of the Coroner's Report. On an AMS Facebook page, the AMS student President states: "The AMS stands firmly behind the NAD [non-academic discipline] system . . . It is our belief that the alcohol infractions should remain under the jurisdiction of NAD . . ."
In our view, this unfriendly position of the AMS is certainly not conducive to better town-gown relations
Further, the AMS President even goes on to urge students to lobby against the recommendation of the Coroner.
In consequence , SONAG urges citizens of Kingston, Queen's Alumni, and Queen's parents to counter-lobby the University in SUPPORT of the Coroner's recommendation. DO IT RIGHT NOW! Send a message to Queen's Principal Dr. Daniel Woolf, by clicking here.
