We
do not view this as a harmless prank. At best, such gratuitous
vandalism shows contempt for the community. At worst, it could cause
serious harm to property and even to life if firefighters were delayed
in locating this hydrant when it was covered with snow.
Since
this is not a rational act, we assume that those who caused this damage
were under the influence of alcohol. We view the overconsumption of alcohol by many Queen's University students as a major, major root cause of the overall deterioration
of the quality of life in our neighbourhood. And for the resulting
tensions between residents and students.
The Queen's Code of Student Conduct specifically mentions the requirement that students obey all liquor laws. Yet Queen's University has done little to enforce these provisions. We demand at minimum that Queen's enforce its own Code of Conduct. Otherwise, why have a Code of Conduct at all?
