Equipment Page

We have found the following items be of good value.

First Telescope
.
Skywatcher 6" Newtonian
.
150mm f/8
.
6 x 30 finderscope
.
Dobsonian mount
.
25mm & 10mm super plossl eyepieces
.
MODIFICATIONS:
.
- added Teflon pads for smoother azimuth swivel
- added 3 - 16" legs for more comfortable viewing
- removed counterweight from behind primary mirror for quicker cooldown
- added sliding weight pad for tube balancing
- added velcro tabs to secure mask and solar filter

Focuser

It soon became apparent that the focuser supplied with the scope was of low quality.  We replaced it with a used, but better quality, VEGA 2" / 1 1/4" focuser.  Although adapting the scope was a bit of a chore, we thank Ann Tekatch for quickly providing what we needed at the right price.

Eyepieces

While the provided Plossl eyepieces were adequate, good quality ep's will dramatically improve a scope's performance - and they don't get much better than the Pentax XL line: 65 degree AFOV and 20mm eye relief.

21mm = 57X  ( 114X barlowed)

7mm = 171 X  ( 343X barlowed)

Finderscope
.
Rigel Quickfinder

1 x magnification
.
Red LED Bull's eye projection -  2 o &  .5 o
.
- variable brightness and thumbwheel control
.
- lightweight

Full-aperture solar filter
.
Baader solar film mounted on aluminum cell
.
- gives a clean white image against a dark background

2 x barlow
.
Meade #140 Apochromatice 2x
.
- much better than the one that came with the scope
.

Flashlight
.
Celestron red LED
.
- 2 diodes / variable brightness thumbwheel control
.
.

William Optics Binoviewer Set
.

Comes with a pair of 20mm eyepieces

We needed to purchase a set of correctors from Harry Siebert to bring them to focus in our dobs, but the views of the Moon are mind-blowing!

Binoculars
.
Carton Adlerblick 10x50
.
- fully multicoated; light and bright

.

Orion Starblast
.
We actually won this great little scope at Starfest

- 113mm aperture  f4

- it gives a nice 3 degree field of view at low power and is the ultimate in portable optics

Hardin Optics 12" Dobsonian
.
Great optics!

This scope is probably the largest practical size for an urban backyard observatory

The fact it's a dob makes it a great value
