Letchworth State Park - Mount Morris, New York - site 527

July 8 - 12, 2010

We had read a lot of good reviews online and, if you are looking for a park with scenery, the main feature that draws in the visitors is Letchworth Gorge. A deep ravine that runs through the park for 10 or 12 miles, it has a couple of nice waterfalls, good opportunites for canoing or kayaking, and ends at the impressive Mount Morris Dam.

There are several observation points, many set up as picnic areas, and all offering great photo ops.

Across from the upper falls is the Glen Iris Inn, the former home of William Pryor Letchworth, and adjacent to that is a small museum with many historical artifacts from the area, including a huge mastadon skull complete with tusks.

The Glen Iris Inn has a few rooms for guests and a really nice restaurant where we ate on the Sunday night with our good friends, Cindy and Stewart, who had joined us on this trip.

Afterwards, we took each other's picture by the upper falls.

There are several small camping loops in the park, each with full washroom/shower facilities. For the most part the sites are a decent size but privacy is only fair to average. Some loops don't allow dogs but all allow campfires. Unfortunately, some folks feel the need for a smoky campfire 24/7 and, so, a couple of times we had to retreat into the trailer and turn on the A/C.

Deer are a common sighting in the park and we even saw a small spotted fawn. We also saw several varieties of birds. Although it was hot, all weekend, we didn't take advantage of the Olympic-sized pool but since it takes less than three hours to get here from home Letchworth will definitely see us again. We're thinking the Fall would be a good time to come.
