Self Help Books - Self TalkThe Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
|
| 1. Be impeccable with your word (say everything that needs to be said and nothing that shouldn't be said; keep your word, it is your bond; ) | |
| 2. Don’t take anything personally (recognize that the way others respond has nothing to do with you but rather reflects their worldview, experience and personal filters) | |
| 3. Don’t make assumptions (clearly communicate your needs and wants; ask questions, clarify and validate your interpretations; double check facts and understanding) | |
| 4. Always do your best (you may think, and your self talk may reinforce the idea, that you are not ready, not good enough, etc. but that simply means that your best today will get better tomorrow...so do your best today, get going and avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret). |
This is a message that makes sense on both a head and heart level. It speaks to your
intellect and your soul. Those who prefer a strictly secular presentation should
be prepared for segments, especially at the open and close, where Ruiz's
particular spiritual perspective shines through. It does not overpower or in
anyway reduce the power of the message however. His simple rules do not require
any spiritual belief or adherence. Just apply them and transform your
life. So don't focus on his words or be distracted by his beliefs, absorb the MESSAGE!
The Four Agreements will not provide the ultimate "fix" but they will
provide an excellent foundation. To truly benefit you need to reflect on your
own life and practices as you read. The Companion Workbook is a worthwhile tool
to help you with that process. If you read The Four Agreements with an open mind and
look for applications in your own life, this will be a truly powerful
tool.
We recommend it highly.

A complimentary workbook for use with The Four Agreements.
This book could be titled: Be Impeccable with Your Inner Word ... or Be Impeccable with Your Self Talk as it builds upon the first of the Four Agreements. In this book Ruiz helps readers understand how to clean up their self talk which he says has been polluted from an early age by the voices of knowledge we encountered while growing up. These voices told us how to live in the world: how to be "good" children; what it takes to be a "winner"; the definition of "success"; etc.. Unfortunately, when we do not meet the standards of the "voices of knowledge" we come to believe that "there's something wrong with us."
Ruiz helps readers to understand how to recognize the messages of the voices of knowledge; how to determine whether they feed us or poison our authentic selves; and how to transform the inner voices so they become allies in the battle for personal integrity and authentic self expression.
An excellent follow up to The Four Agreements.
This is a book about relationships. It will transform your understanding of
what makes relationships work and what impedes them on personal and professional
levels. It is about acceptance of self as well as acceptance of others, as they
are without expectations or encumbrances. Following Ruiz advice will help you to
take the drama out of your relationships and replace it with trust and
authenticity.
Highly recommended as a follow-up to The Voice of Knowledge.
Emotions are powerful and valuable. They reveal to us what has heart and meaning to us. They also warn us of perceived threats. For all their value, they can cause us problems, if ignored or if allowed to dominate our lives. The key to Emotional Intelligence is learning how to calm your emotions so you can respond rationally.
Deep breathing, laughter and/or meditation are all effective techniques that can be applied to manage emotional reactions and retain or regain rational control.
Prayers, by Don Miguel Ruiz is an excellent resource for those who want to learn how to manage their emotions. In it, Ruiz shares his favorite meditations (which he calls prayers) to help readers let go of any anger, sadness and especially fears that are inhibiting their relationships, their performance and their authentic self expression.
An excellent follow up to The Mastery of Love.
