Improved Productivity and Cost Savings at Canem Systems Ltd.
Productivity improvements translate directly into cost savings, which affect bottom-line profits. In each of the following examples, Canem has increased on-site productivity and achieved significant cost savings on projects.
The Nova Computer Centre, a 22% Labour savings. The value of the contract for this project was $5.8 million, and construction was scheduled to last 10 months. The Nova Computer Centre's electrical rooms are located on the top floor of a five-story building which did not have hoisting facilities.
Major pre-planning issues for the project included the following:
Installing a temporary hoist facility in the centre of the building that provided access to all floors.
Reducing reel quantities of 750Mcm using larger 72" reels.
Limited access, forcing all reels to be placed on the main floor by the lift shaft.
Strategic placement of pulleys allowed the installation of cable to all floors from one point.
The Results: estimated labour costs for this project were $1,024,685. Actual labour costs turned out to be $800,480 for a savings of $224,205 (22%)
Olympic Media Centre, labour costs reduced by 31%. The value of the contract for this project was $3 million, and construction was scheduled to last 9 months. The contract involved keeping the Media Centre operational while installing all equipment within 24 weeks and removing it within 3 weeks at the conclusion of the Olympic games. Existing high voltage switchgear and transformers were to be removed, and a new 4,000 amp. switchboard installed with no disruptions.
Major pre-planning issues for the project included the following:
Installing all equipment so that it could be quickly and easily removed.
Retaining all packaging for future use.
Reconfiguring distribution equipment
Rerouting the buss duct and feeders
Arranging for the contractor to make architectural changes to accommodate the
installation and removal of gearThe Results: estimated labour costs for this project were $922,857 Actual labour costs turned out to be $633,647 for a savings of $289,190 (31%)
The productivity increases described above were achieved by initiating effective pre-planning and materials handling techniques. Implementing these techniques is both easy and inexpensive. The costs associated with implementation are approximately 10% of the savings produced.
