What is Yoga?

Yoga is a spiritual union of the mind and body, thoughts and feelings, internal and external, individual self and the universal self. These unions are promised by different practices and techniques.

Hatha Yoga is one of these practice which unite mind and body. It helps one to tune with their body. The different practices of Yoga appear to be different in the beginning, but in the end, all of them conclude purposefully at one place. It is just like the rivers that start from different places, but end in same sea.

Hatha Yoga includes Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Kriyas, Bandhas, and Mudras. Its Savasana and Yoganidra are a treat for all practitioners. Yoga respects an individual's ability to perform certain postures. It requires the exertion of energy, but not in a forceful or strenuous manner, rather in a gentle way. It encourages one to "let go" while the mind is focused.

Studying Yoga with Nitya, I learned that what is impossible is not as far away as I think. All of the yoga and meditation at the studio is guided by this principle, and that if I can quiet the mind, all kinds of doors will open.

When I met Nitya, I knew I’d found the right yoga teacher. He taught me that yoga is not about the physical postures; it’s an approach to life, a way of tuning the body and mind towards a new benchmark of living. Nitya has always supported me to question, to grow, and to explore.  Nitya’s own dedication to the practice has encouraged me to take my practice to a deeper level, both on and off the mat. Uplifted, is probably the best word to describe how I feel after one of Nitya’s classes.

In 2003, I took the teacher training program at Swami Vishnu Yoga Centre with Nitya Kandath. Now, almost 6 years later, I am still regularly practicing and teaching at the centre. Nitya is an unending source of information and inspiration for all that have the fortune of knowing him and experiencing his teachings. The centre is a place where people gather and are encouraged to explore themselves and learn what yoga truly is. Classes are taught with pure joy, in the spirit of sharing, and everyone is always welcome.

Michelle, Instructor

Nitya's Yoga gave me the spiritual insight of being. As a long time practioner of martial arts, I now have a better understanding of non-violence practice through the smallest of actions. I recommend Nitya's teaching and guidance to everyone.
