In the 'Grid' series, the inherent (yet undisclosed) narrative subtext has been further obscured.
A focused 'organic' figure has been fixed into a contrived geometric grid environment. This mapping precisely sets a character into it's synthetic picture plane.
Ambiguous, the ground relates an uncertain setting. Once described in the piece, these ordered formal elements (collapsed into rectangles) are not developed systematically as in traditional 'abstracts'. They may refer to the original captured image or play with value and contrast : the hues may percolate from the central figure(s) or be pulled arbitrarily from my palette for contrast. These backgrounds are nebulous, perhaps a foil to speculate on the abstract / realism schism.
The physical application persists in coaxing a painterly aesthetic in the composition.
This work continues to rebel against the demise of painting : they are paintings that reveal my process.
