Watkins Glen State Park - Watkins Glen, New York - Mohawk loop, site 97

September 13-15, 2009

The last time we'd visited Watkins Glen State Park was in a tent, and we'd left prematurely due to 3 days of torrential rain. This time, not only were we better equipped but we had much better weather!

On the way down, we'd stopped at Camping World and bought an extra length of fresh water hose. This worked out well as our site was near to a spigot and I was able to fill the tank directly from the tap.

The main attraction of the park is the nearby Watkins Glen Gorge. Along a pleasant 2 mile hike you can see 19 waterfalls. The hike may be fairly short but we were glad to have our hiking poles.

The trail crosses over the narrow gorge several times, and it was really neat to see how the water had carved out the rocks.

We also did a short wine tour and picked up a few interesting bottles of vino. One night we ate at Jerlando's Pizza Co. This place had good reviews but we found it to be just average.

In the campsite next to us was couple from Guelph who had just picked up a used motorhome on e-bay. Earlier that day, they had tried to negotiate one of the Glen's steep roads and lost their spare tire.

We stayed for 2 nights here, then moved on to Pennsylvania
