Leonard Harrison State Park - Wellsboro, Pennsylvania - site 24

September 15 - 17, 2009

This intimate state park has only one loop of 28 sites. Situated on the east rim of Pine Creek Canyon, which is known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, it is within a short walk of the visitor's centre.

At the entrance to the overlook is an interpretive centre and a nice souvenir shop. From there you can pick up a groomed trail down to the bottom of the canyon. We did this the second day, taking about 50 minutes to descend and a bit longer to come back up - tiring but well worth the effort.

Gail and I are amateur astronomers, and on this particular trip we were onroute to a star party (more on that later). That night we invited our neighbours in the park to look though our telescope, but just as we had a nice group assembled the clouds showed up. Oh well, at least we got to meet our fellow campers.

As we drove through Wellsboro on the way to our next stop, Cherry Springs State Park, we passed this old-style diner. We promised ourselves we'd have lunch there the next time we were in the area.
