Each piece of sculpture at WoodSong Studio begins on the lathe.     Employing carving techniques, I try to release the energy trapped in this once living material, and give new life to the wood.

Exuberance   S 820
This little group is clearly pleased about something!  Sculpted honey locust on P.E.I. stone.  The locust wood is from the grounds of the Governor General of Canada.

The Weightlifter    S 817
A weightlifter examines his form in one of the mirrors which are always present in body-sculpting gyms. The willow for this work was obtained from a tree that succumbed to the ice storm that assaulted Ottawa a decade or so ago.

Midnight Blossom   S 818
This is a beautiful piece of black walnut!  The petals of the blossom are turned thin enough to flex slightly giving life to the sculpture. The pale green, formal, soapstone base is of Chinese soapstone.

Anthemion 790
The extensive piercing and the vein structure give this dyed elm member of the Anthemion series a very botanical appearance.      The rich dark brown colour contrasts nicely with the light green soapstone.

Anthemion 787
This yellow birch member of the Anthemion series has a Manitoba maple flower pod on a long stem.    The red is the natural colour often found in this species of maple.     From the heartwood of a tree uprooted by the wind, near Gracefield Quebec.  The base is soapstone.                    13" high

This member of the Philosopher Series is about communication
     It is a graphic representation of talking in circles without ever getting to the point!     The rich afrormosia wood is from Africa and is complimented by the brown soapstone.

Anthemion 812
What a spectacular wood!  I picked up a few small chunks of it and it is birds'eye, but I don't know what species.  The edges of the "leaves" were the only part pierced to preserve the natural beauty of the wood.   The patterns in the wood are picked up in similar patterns in the soapstone.     6" high.

The random piercing on this piece allows enough light through to give a very airy and lacy appearance.  The rich brown of the black walnut is picked up  in a brown speckle in the soapstone.

 On Britania Bay  S747 748
On a breezy summer day, numerous small craft zip back and forth across Britania Bay in Ottawa.    Red gum sails set on red flecked, black granite.   The warm gum wood is reminiscent of the summer sun.     12.5" and 15" high

Primordial Mist    S767
The carved, bleached pear wood rises, like a mist, from the mysterious primordial ooze of black dyed birch.

Favorable Winds  S 749 750
These sails were turned from a 25" diameter piece of Bubinga from Cameroon.  The sails taper from 3/4" to a thin forward edge.   Steel pegs support the wood about one inch above the black granite base.     21" high

Amber Swarovski crystals accent the neck of this whimsical sculpture.   The white oak carving is set in a dyed piece of driftwood from the shores of P.E.I.    The emotions contained in the mysterious and inscrutable interior, well up from a tangle of hidden passion!           17" high

These two intrepid rivermen are involved in the very dangerous job of moving timber down the Ottawa River.   California redwood  14" high.

In this sculpture, the authority figure is of walnut and the schoolboys are maple.  The walnut figure is elevated on a  stepped, marble base.
