Each piece of sculpture at WoodSong Studio begins on the lathe.     Employing carving techniques, I try to release the energy trapped in this once living material, and give new life to the wood.

Britania Bay  S747 748
On a breezy summer day, numerous small craft zip back and forth across Britania Bay in Ottawa.    Red gum sails set on red flecked, black granite.   The warm gum wood is reminiscent of the summer sun.     12.5" and 15" high

The carved, bleached pear wood rises, like a mist, from the mysterious primordial ooze of black dyed birch.

Favorable Winds  S 749 750
These sails were turned from a 25" diameter piece of Bubinga from Cameroon.  The sails taper from 3/4" to a thin forward edge.   Steel pegs support the wood about one inch above the black granite base.     21" high

California redwood set in a piece of ebony.  Gentle tropical breezes, islands, and lagoons inspired this sculpture.

Amber Swarovski crystals accent the neck of this whimsical sculpture.   The white oak carving is set in a dyed piece of driftwood from the shores of P.E.I.    The emotions contained in the mysterious and inscrutable interior, well up from a tangle of hidden passion!           17" high

Hubble's Orion   S738
The pictures of interstellar nebulae that the Hubble telescope has provided are absolutely stunning!   The Orion nebula, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful.   This sculpture is an attempt to capture some of this excitement, in this, the year of astronomy.      American elm, set in granite, with Swarovski crystals as stars.    15" high

The sapelle carving floats above the plexiglass like mountains in a watery mirage.

Bee Hive     724
The piercing on this black cherry vase draws to a natural knothole and resembles a swarm of bees returning to the hive.
The wall thickness of this vase is less than 3/16" throughout, with the recessed part less than 1/8".

Silent Hearth     714
The visual attraction of a fire is present in this piece of flame birch.   The shifting patterns draw the eye, like a fireside, as they recede deep into the wood.   The cradle and base are of dyed maple.

Rising out of a dyed, carved base, these three spirits of bleached , hard maple do a spring dance.

Set in marble, these conspirators (Brutus, Cassius etc?) are turned from black cherry, which gives a rich contrast to the marble.  The cherry is aged and dyed black on the inside with a little texturing and a red wash.       15" high

a carved and dyed maple cradle, and is set
